How Do I Stop Watching TikTok?
By Max Ward, co-founder of DisConnect ·
Short answer: make TikTok harder to open than to skip. Get it off your home screen, set a daily limit, and block it with something you can't dismiss in one tap, or delete it outright. You're far from the only one trying: Pew Research says 37% of US adults use TikTok, including 63% of adults under 30.
Why is TikTok so hard to stop watching?
Because there's no bottom. The For You feed picks the next video for you and starts it before you've decided anything, so there's never a natural place to stop. Every swipe might be the good one. That's not you being weak. It's a product working exactly as designed (your phone was built to work this way).
How many people use TikTok?
A lot, and more every year. In a Pew Research Center survey from 2025, 37% of US adults said they use TikTok, up from 21% in 2021. Among adults under 30 it's 63%, compared with 44% of people aged 30 to 49. Pew also found about one in five US teens say they're on it "almost constantly."
What actually works to stop watching TikTok?
- Take it off your home screen. If your thumb can find it without looking, it'll find it. Move it to the App Library or a folder on the last page.
- Turn off TikTok notifications. Settings > Notifications > TikTok on iPhone. Fewer invitations, fewer openings.
- Set a limit, then expect to blow past it. TikTok has its own screen time settings, and iPhone has Settings > Screen Time > App Limits. Both are easy to wave away, which is why most people stop at step 3 and fail (why Ignore Limit always wins).
- Block it with real friction. A block that takes effort to undo holds up better than a reminder (do app blockers actually work?).
- Replace the slot it fills. TikTok usually fills a specific gap: bed, the toilet, the commute, the first five minutes of a break. Pick something for that slot before you remove the app.
Should I just delete TikTok?
If you can, sure. Deleting the app is the strongest move, and the mobile site is clunky enough to add some friction. But plenty of people delete it, reinstall it the next bad night, and feel worse. If that's you, blocking it on a schedule may stick better than an all-or-nothing deletion. For the bigger picture, see does quitting social media improve mental health? and how to stop doomscrolling.
How does the DisConnect Card stop TikTok?
The DisConnect Card is a physical NFC card that works with the free DisConnect app for iPhone. Choose TikTok, plus whatever you'd switch to instead, tap the card to block them, and they stay blocked until you tap the card again. Leave the card in another room and "one more video" means getting up. How NFC app blockers work.
The For You page can wait. The DisConnect Card is $39 one-time, needs no battery, and works with the free DisConnect app for iPhone. 30-day money-back guarantee.
