How Do I Turn My iPhone Into a Dumb Phone?
By Max Ward, co-founder of DisConnect ·
Short answer: you can't make an iPhone dumb, but you can make it act dumb. Build a Focus that shows a single Home Screen with calls, texts, maps and camera, silence notifications from everything except people, switch the display to grayscale, and block the feeds with a lock you can't undo in one tap. You keep your number, your maps and your banking app.
Why not just buy a dumbphone?
Plenty of people try it and last two weeks. Two-factor codes, transit tickets, boarding passes, group chats and maps all assume a smartphone now. The problem was never the phone being smart. It's the six apps engineered to never let you put it down. So keep the tools and lock up the slot machines.
Step 1: Make a "Dumb" Focus with one Home Screen
In Settings > Focus, create a custom Focus. Under notifications, allow only the people who should be able to reach you. Then customize its screens: you can choose which Home Screen pages appear while the Focus is on. Make a page with only Phone, Messages, Maps, Camera, Calendar and whatever you truly need (ride share, bank, transit), and show only that page. Turn the Focus on and your iPhone looks like a very expensive flip phone. Apple's guide is linked below.
Step 2: Turn it grey
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters and choose Grayscale. Feeds are designed to be bright and rewarding, and grey takes the shine off. A 2023 study found one week of grayscale cut daily screen time by about 20 minutes. More on that study and other settings.
Step 3: Block the feeds, not just hide them
A hidden app is one search away. A Screen Time limit is one "Ignore Limit" tap away. Here's why that button always wins. For a dumbphone that stays dumb, the apps have to be actually blocked, with the unlock somewhere inconvenient. How to block apps so you can't unblock them.
Step 4: Make it switch back on purpose
The point isn't to live in a cave. It's that going back to the full phone becomes a decision instead of a reflex. Schedule the Focus for work hours or evenings, and keep the unlock away from your hand.
Where does DisConnect fit?

Pick the apps that make your phone smart in the bad way, tap the card to block them, and they stay blocked until you tap it again. Leave the card at home and your iPhone is a dumbphone until you get back. How NFC app blockers work.
Dumbphone mode, no second phone. The DisConnect Card is $39 one-time, needs no battery, and works with the free DisConnect app for iPhone. 30-day money-back guarantee.

Questions people ask
How do I turn my iPhone into a dumb phone?
Create a custom Focus that shows only one Home Screen page with calls, texts, maps and camera, allow notifications only from people, turn on grayscale, and block social and video apps with a lock you can't undo in one tap.
Is there a dumbphone mode on iPhone?
Not by that name. A custom Focus can hide every Home Screen page except one and silence app notifications, which gets you most of the way. It doesn't block apps, so pair it with an app blocker.
Is it better to buy a dumbphone or limit my iPhone?
For most people, limiting the iPhone lasts longer, because two-factor codes, maps, tickets and group chats assume a smartphone. Keep the tools and block the feeds instead.
