How Do I Stop Checking My Phone at Work?

By Max Ward, co-founder of DisConnect ·

Short answer: to stop checking your phone at work, get it out of sight and add a step between you and the apps. Put it in a bag or drawer, not face-down on the desk. Lock the worst apps with a physical blocker you leave somewhere else. Batch your checks into set breaks. Research suggests a phone in view drains focus even when it's off.

Why face-down doesn't count

In a 2017 study from the University of Texas at Austin, people who left their phones in another room did measurably better on tests of working memory and fluid intelligence than people whose phones were on the desk, even face-down and silent. Part of your brain is busy not checking it. More on the research here.

So the fix isn't trying harder. It's moving the phone.

Five fixes that don't rely on willpower

1. Out of sight, out of reach

Bag, drawer, locker, coat pocket on the hook. Anywhere that means standing up. Face-down on the desk is still on the desk.

2. Lock the apps, leave the key

Tap the DisConnect Card when you sit down and Instagram, TikTok, Reddit and whatever else you picked lock. To unlock, you need the card. Leave it in your car or at home. Calls and texts still come through, so nobody's emergency gets missed.

3. Put your checks on a schedule

Check at :50 every hour, or only at lunch. A set time turns a thousand small decisions into one. DisConnect's schedules can lock apps automatically during work hours so you don't have to remember.

4. Kill the notifications that aren't people

Every badge is an invitation. Turn off notifications for anything that isn't a human trying to reach you. On iPhone, a Work Focus can silence everything except the people and apps you allow.

5. Give your hands a default

The check is usually a reflex during a pause: loading screen, waiting for a reply, end of a task. Keep a notebook open. Refill your water. Stand up. Pick the replacement before the pause shows up.

If you run a team

Nobody focuses well in an office where everyone's phone is buzzing on the table. We work with companies on phone-free meetings and focus time. See DisConnect for teams.

Leave the card in the car. The DisConnect Card is $39, one time. The app is free on iPhone.
